I am prepared to give a number of different types of lectures and workshops in the following areas:
Baroque Music Performance
What are the “rules” or guidelines for performing baroque music? An introduction to playing baroque music. Concepts discussed: dynamics, articulations, ornaments, historical background, tempi, and the development of our instruments.
Oboe Reed Adjustment for Band Directors
How can secondary music educators help their young oboists? Having a working reed is so crucial. This is a fun and confidence-building hands-on class in which each band director is taught how to do beginning reed adjustment to commercially-made reeds.
Articulation and Rhetorical Articulation
A discussion about the importance of articulation and how it relates to communicating expression in music. Frequently references the book by Judy Tarling, The Weapons of Rhetoric, A Guide for Musicians and Audiences.
English Horn basics for the student
Many young oboists are very eager to try the english horn. This is a young oboist’s introduction to playing this beautiful instrument.
Taking Auditions
For the more advanced student, this class talks about the typical repertoire asked for in an audition and the general ins and outs of taking auditions.
Oboe Masterclasses
Students play and I listen and demonstrate. Together, we discover new ways to approach music and try to solve some of the problems that we encounter as oboists and musicians. Masterclasses typically address topics like: the music itself, performance anxiety, breathing/air, practice strategies, and reeds (of course!).
